The second “Lara Croft, Tomb Raider” epic has fared below expectations ($43 million through its second weekend), but that doesn’t stop Angelina Jolie from reigning as Number One Glamour Girl, with a host of magazine covers including Rolling Stone, Cosmopolitan, French Max, & Movieline. Beyonce’ Knowles is a strong #2 as the young R&B princess stands at #1 on the U.S. and European charts with the hot single “Crazy In Love” from her international chart-topping debut solo album, and excellent cover features for Maxim Blender, British Elle, Q magazine, and Essence among others. A truly dismalng weekend for her romantic comedy “Gigli” ensured that Jennifer Lopez would not be able to climb higher than #3 despite strong cover layouts in Esquire, American Photo and Fit.

 

“Pirates of the Caribbean” has emerged as one of the smash hits of the summer ($210 million and counting), and a prime reason is leading lady Keira Knightley, who ranks #4, aided as well by her co-starring role in the wonderful “Bend It Like Beckham” and cover layout in Elle. Rising to a new personal best of #5 is exotic Brooke Burke with her hot cover layout in the August Stuff and her consistently high Internet rankings in the Lycos Top 50. R&B sizzler Ashanti Douglas also attains a new peak position of #6 with her #1 album “Chapter II” and Top Three single “Rock Wit’ You,” plus cover feature in Elle Girl. Making her first visit to the Top Ten in almost exactly a year (Aug. 14, 2002), Britney Spears surges to #7 with her instant classic near-topless cover and feature in British Elle and sexy cover feature for W magazine. Cameron Diaz hangs in at #8 with “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” topping $95 million, hot cast layout in British Maxim, and Us cover with boy toy Justin Timberlake. Gabrielle Union soars to #9 (her first time in the Top Ten) thanks to the $110 million-plus box office of “Bad Boys 2” and lovely fashion layout in Movieline‘s Hollywood Life. How the Glamour Girls Hot 100 Is Compiled

Glamour girls earn points for each biweekly chart in the following categories:

1)     Movies: The current Top 60 at the box office; films that recently left theaters; and pictures scheduled for release in the coming weeks. Note that a glamorous role in a mid-level film can earn more credit than a bland role in a bigger hit. Oscars, Golden Globes, and other honors are included; also, critical acclaim can earn the same credit as box office dollars.

2)     Magazines: Approximately 150 U.S. and international publications are included in each survey. Magazines on newsstands during the survey period count most heavily; recent magazines of the previous few weeks count at reduced value. Covers earn more points than inside features; top-level magazines (Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, etc.) are accorded higher point totals than others; nude or semi-nude layouts get extra credit. Newspapers (most notably USA Today) and pin-up calendars are also included in this category.

3)     TV: What’s on the tube during the two-week survey period, including first-run movies and appearances on late-night talk shows; Nielsen ratings and Emmy/Golden Globe awards are also taken into consideration.

4)     Internet: The major factors in this category are the Lycos Top 50, a weekly chart measuring the most-searched items through the Lycos search engine (including many glamour girls), and the daily top 100 rankings by DAI News tracking the women with the most photo downloads. Selected Web sites are also included, most notably Gateway to Eden, the Playboy Cyber Club, Mystique, Bomis, Ask Men.com, Famous Centerfolds, Danni’s Hard Drive, Maxim, FHM & GQ websites, and others.

5)     Music: The Billboard singles and album charts; MTV and VH-1 music video rankings as published in Billboard; European and international charts. Grammy Awards and other music industry honors are credited here.

6)     Home Video: The video sales, video rentals, and DVD sales charts as reported in Billboard and Entertainment Weekly. This category carries less weight than the above “Big Five.”

7)     Sports: Glamorous gals who earn athletic achievements during the survey period.

8)     Other: Broadway and off-Broadway theater; books.

9)     Beauty and Sex Appeal.
