For the first time since July 2002, Britney Spears is once again the Number One Glamour Girl thanks to her instant classic near-topless cover and feature in British Elle (which sent her always-high Internet download numbers soaring into the stratosphere) and sexy cover features for the New York Times Fashions of the Times and W magazines. Beyonce’ Knowles is #2 for the fourth consecutive week as the young R&B princess stands atop the U.S. and European charts with the hot single “Crazy In Love” from her international chart-topping debut solo album, with excellent covers for Glamour and Savoy, among others. “Pirates of the Caribbean” has emerged as one of the smash hits of the summer ($249 million and counting), and a prime reason is leading lady Keira Knightley, who ranks #3, aided as well by her co-starring role in the wonderful “Bend It Like Beckham.”

 

The second “Lara Croft, Tomb Raider” epic has fared below expectations ($59 million through its fourth weekend), but Angelina Jolie is nevertheless #4 after reigning for three weeks as Number One Glamour Girl, boosted by magazine covers including Movieline. Cameron Diaz edges back up to #5 with “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” topping $98 million, hot cast cover layout in Maxim En Espanol, and fine solo cover feature in Italian GQ. Gabrielle Union holds at #6 as a result of the $129 million box office of “Bad Boys 2.” Swimsuit supermodel Heidi Klum climbs to #7 with cover features in German GQ, New York, and the premiere issue of Vegas, plus a boudoir layout in French Max. “Smallville” dream girl Kristin Kreuk makes a big move to #8 with her terrific cover feature in Femme Fatales. She portrays a killer cyborg in “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” ($148 million to date), and #9 Kristanna Loken shows off her equally devastating body with cover features in the Spanish magazine Man and Maxim en Espanol. Exotic Brooke Burke returns to #10 with her bikini spread in Front, hot cover layout in Stuff and her consistently high Internet rankings in the Lycos Top 50.

(This is our 76th published survey dating back to October 2000, each covering two weeks; retroactive biweekly charts covering the period from December 1999 through September 2000 have been compiled, for a grand total of 195 charted weeks.)

Two large heart symbols ©© can be found to the left of all women who have spent at least 10 weeks in the Number One position, or have reached #1 with at least 100 weeks in the Top Ten.

A single large heart symbol © is to the left of all women who have spent 1 to 9 weeks in the Number One position, or who have previously ranked as the #1 Glamour Girl of the Year.

Women who have either: a) reached the #2 or #3 position (regardless of total weeks) ; b) spent at least 10 weeks in the Top Ten; c) reached #4-10 with 100 or more weeks on the Hot 100; or d) ranked as one of the top three glamour girls of the year during the past 10 years have a medium-large heart © to the left of their entries.

How the Glamour Girls Hot 100 Is Compiled

Glamour girls earn points for each biweekly chart in the following categories:

1)     Movies: The current Top 60 at the box office; films that recently left theaters; and pictures scheduled for release in the coming weeks. Note that a glamorous role in a mid-level film can earn more credit than a bland role in a bigger hit. Oscars, Golden Globes, and other honors are included; also, critical acclaim can earn the same credit as box office dollars.

2)     Magazines: Approximately 150 U.S. and international publications are included in each survey. Magazines on newsstands during the survey period count most heavily; recent magazines of the previous few weeks count at reduced value. Covers earn more points than inside features; top-level magazines (Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, etc.) are accorded higher point totals than others; nude or semi-nude layouts get extra credit. Newspapers (most notably USA Today) and pin-up calendars are also included in this category.

3)     TV: What’s on the tube during the two-week survey period, including first-run movies and appearances on late-night talk shows; Nielsen ratings and Emmy/Golden Globe awards are also taken into consideration.

4)     Internet: The major factors in this category are the Lycos Top 50, a weekly chart measuring the most-searched items through the Lycos search engine (including many glamour girls), and the daily top 100 rankings by DAI News tracking the women with the most photo downloads. Selected Web sites are also included, most notably Gateway to Eden, the Playboy Cyber Club, Mystique, Bomis, Ask Men.com, Famous Centerfolds, Danni’s Hard Drive, Maxim, FHM & GQ websites, and others.

5)     Music: The Billboard singles and album charts; MTV and VH-1 music video rankings as published in Billboard; European and international charts. Grammy Awards and other music industry honors are credited here.

6)     Home Video: The video sales, video rentals, and DVD sales charts as reported in Billboard and Entertainment Weekly. This category carries less weight than the above “Big Five.”

7)     Sports: Glamorous gals who earn athletic achievements during the survey period.

8)     Other: Broadway and off-Broadway theater; books.

9)     Beauty and Sex Appeal.
