After biding her time in the #2 position for the past month, Jennifer Lopez returns to Number One on the Glamour Girls Hot 100 for a record sixth time, boosted not only by her success on the record charts, magazine newsstands, and the movie box office, but by the sensational response her near-topless Oscar-night dress generated on the Internet. While J.Lo’s total of 367 points was far short of the astonishing point totals she racked up during February, it’s still the fifth highest anyone has accumulated in one survey. Catherine Zeta Jones, a steady #3 for the previous four surveys, edges back up to #2, while Oscar’s favorite lady Julia Roberts slips from #1 to #3. The music world provides two Top Ten debuts for the survey. Beyonce Knowles of Destiny’s Child has been steadily climbing the chart for six months, and cracks the Top Ten for the first time thanks to an impressive number of magazine covers and the group’s latest hit, “Survivor.” Janet Jackson makes a spectacular leap from #39 to #10 because of her new #1 smash “All for You,” and her provocative, widely-discussed cover story/interview in Vibe magazine. Among the ladies showing upward movement on the strength of movie roles are #16 Jennifer Love Hewitt ("Heartbreakers"), #17 Ashley Judd (“Someone Like You”), and the highest debut of the week, #43 Renee Zellweger (“Bridget Jones’s Diary”). A disappointing box office debut by “Josie & the Pussycats” slowed down the momentum of co-stars Tara Reid and Rachel Leigh Cook (at #51 and #52, respectively). A splendid cover layout in British FHM enables Halle Berry to leap from #64 to #39. And now, the Hot 100 for April 18, 2001. The Latina bombshell’s album “J. girls earn points for each biweekly chart in the following categories: 1)
Movies: The current Top 60 at the box office;
films that recently left theaters; and pictures scheduled for release in the
coming weeks. Note that a
glamorous role in a mid-level film can earn more points than a bland role in a
bigger hit. Also, critical acclaim
can earn the same credit as box office dollars. 2)
Magazines: Approximately 150 U.S. and
international publications are included in each survey. Magazines on newsstands during the
survey period count most heavily; recent magazines of the previous month or two
count at reduced value. Covers
earn more points than inside features; top-level magazines (Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, etc.) are accorded higher point totals
than others; nude or semi-nude layouts get extra credit. Newspapers (most notably the London
Sun and USA Today) and pin-up calendars are also included
in this category. 3)
TV: What’s on the tube during the
two-week survey period, including not only series but movies airing on the
networks and cable plus appearances on late-night talk shows; Nielsen ratings
and Emmy/Golden Globe awards also taken into consideration. 4)
Internet: The major factors in this category are
the Lycos Top 50, a weekly chart measuring the most-searched items through the
Lycos search engine (including many glamour girls); Yahoo’s 100 most
popular women based on total websites, Yahoo clubs, and auction items; and the
Bomis Report rankings of models, porn stars, and others with the most website
hits. Selected Web sites are also included, most notably Gateway to Eden, the
Playboy Cyber Club, Mystique, IGN for Men, Ask Men.com, Top Net Models, Famous
Centerfolds, Women of Desire, and others.
