A sensational cover spread in Stuff magazine and a Top Five single elevate seven-time chart-topper Jennifer Lopez to the #2 position; Catherine Zeta Jones (“America’s Sweethearts”) slips two spots to #3. Soaring all the way from #35 to #4 is Spanish goddess Penelope Cruz, co-star of “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” (including a semi-nude love scene) and radiant Vanity Fair cover girl. The recuperating Mariah Carey (#5) is followed by “Planet of the Apes” bombshell Estella Warren. Nicole Kidman leaps 11 positions to #7 thanks to her powerhouse performance in “The Others.” Three vixens of the music charts—Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, and Beyonce Knowles (moving back up due to the #1 smash “Bootylicious”)—round out the Top Ten in style. For the first time since the Hot 100 began 47 weeks ago, Pamela Anderson slips out of the Top Ten, leaving J-Lo as the only gal with a perfect Top Ten attendance record; Pam will assuredly return to the elite circle soon. Anna Kournikova makes a strong move to #14 because of her superb cover layout in FHM. Smash sequel “American Pie 2” is responsible for three hot movers: #16 Shannon Elizabeth, #36 Mena Suvari, and #46 Tara Reid. Her femme-fatale role in Woody Allen’s “Curse of the Jade Scorpion” lifts Charlize Theron to #18. films that recently left theaters; and pictures scheduled for release in the coming
weeks. Note that a glamorous role
in a mid-level film can earn more points than a bland role in a bigger
hit. Also, critical acclaim can
earn the same credit as box office dollars. 2)
Magazines: Approximately 150 U.S. and
international publications are included in each survey. Magazines on newsstands during the
survey period count most heavily; recent magazines of the previous month or two
count at reduced value. Covers
earn more points than inside features; top-level magazines (Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, etc.) are accorded higher point totals
than others; nude or semi-nude layouts get extra credit. Newspapers (most notably USA Today) and pin-up calendars are also included
in this category. 3)
TV: What’s on the tube during the
two-week survey period, including not only series but movies airing on the
networks and cable plus appearances on late-night talk shows; Nielsen ratings
and Emmy/Golden Globe awards also taken into consideration. 4)
Internet: The major factors in this category are
the Lycos Top 50, a weekly chart measuring the most-searched items through the
Lycos search engine (including many glamour girls); Yahoo’s 100 most
