Catherine Zeta Jones earns her third Number One ranking in the Glamour Girls Hot 100 thanks to the box office success of “America’s Sweethearts” and her strength at magazine newsstands. Angelina Jolie didn’t relinquish the top spot without a fight; her unrivaled number of current magazine covers and a second film in theaters (“Original Sin”) made it a close contest. “Sweethearts” co-star Julia Roberts is #3, followed by troubled diva Mariah Carey—now resting in a New York hospital following her “emotional and physical breakdown”—at #4. A sensational cover feature in Stuff magazine enables Jennifer Lopez to move back up a position to #5. Halle Berry, Pamela Anderson, and Janet Jackson precede two Top Ten newcomers: #9 Estella Warren (featured in the smash “Planet of the Apes”) and #10 Reese Witherspoon (star of “Legally Blonde”). With Destiny’s Child hitting #1 in Billboard with “Bootylicious,” Beyonce Knowles moves up five spots to #13 and has a chance to return to the Top Ten. Jessica Simpson’s pop chart success boosts her to a personal-best #17 ranking. The spectacular box office debut of “Rush Hour 2” is responsible for Zhang Ziyi‘s big move from #46 to #22 (and the debut of her castmate Roselyn Sanchez at #53). “Planet of the Apes” leading lady Helena Bonham Carter catapults 35 positions to #27 with the Tim Burton flick’s big numbers, and another “Apes” beauty, Lisa Marie, moves up to #40. Just before the premiere of “American Pie 2,” Shannon Elizabeth surges to #36. Pop music bombshells Aaliyah (#28), Mandy Moore (#29), and Willa Ford (#33) are all strong movers on the Hot 100. The stars of the September Playboy, “Survivor” cover girl Jerri Manthey (#56) and Playmate Dalene Kurtis (#57), are among the week’s highest debuts. coming weeks. Note that a
glamorous role in a mid-level film can earn more points than a bland role in a
bigger hit. Also, critical acclaim
can earn the same credit as box office dollars. 2)
Magazines: Approximately 150 U.S. and
international publications are included in each survey. Magazines on newsstands during the
survey period count most heavily; recent magazines of the previous month or two
count at reduced value. Covers
earn more points than inside features; top-level magazines (Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, etc.) are accorded higher point totals
than others; nude or semi-nude layouts get extra credit. Newspapers (most notably USA Today) and pin-up calendars are also included
in this category. 3)
TV: What’s on the tube during the two-week
survey period, including not only series but movies airing on the networks and
cable plus appearances on late-night talk shows; Nielsen ratings and
Emmy/Golden Globe awards also taken into consideration. 4)
Internet: The major factors in this category are
the Lycos Top 50, a weekly chart measuring the most-searched items through the
Lycos search engine (including many glamour girls); Yahoo’s 100 most
