In a survey period dominated by the Winter Olympics, Oscar nominations, and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Britney Spears returns to the Number One position with the early box office success of her movie starring debut “Crossroads,” plus her myriad magazine covers, hit album, and Internet dominance. In so doing, Britney ties the record of 16 total weeks in the #1 position set by Jennifer Lopez (who is #5 this time for her chart-topping album of remixes and FHM cover). Halle Berry receives the Oscar nomination she so richly deserved as best actress for “Monster’s Ball,” and her reward is the #2 Glamour Girl ranking—the seventh consecutive week she has ranked in the Top Two (one of those weeks at #1). She is followed in the survey by two more Oscar nominees: #3 Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”) and #4 Nicole Kidman (“Moulin Rouge”). Farther down the list are three additional actresses who achieved the final list of Academy contenders: #35 Kate Winslet (“Iris”), #36 Marisa Tomei (“In the Bedroom”), and #97 Renee Zellweger (“Bridget Jones’s Diary”). Cameron Diaz was skipped over by the Oscars, but is a strong #6 for her Cosmopolitan cover. Although “Rollerball” is a big-screen misfire, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos nonetheless hangs in at #7. With the Grammy Awards ceremonies just days away, six-award nominee Alicia Keys rises to a new personal best of #8. A breathlessly sexy HBO concert special catapults Janet Jackson back up 17 positions to #9. Tera Patrick at #10 is our first-ever porn star to achieve the Top Ten thanks to the covers of Playboy and Penthouse. (Fellow adult-cinema queen Jenna Jameson may shortly duplicate this achievement as she surges to #13.) The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue hit newsstands right at presstime for this survey, and the bikini beauties within its covers will be major forces on the Hot 100 for many weeks to come. Heidi Klum jumps to #14; SI cover girl Yamila Diaz-Rahi soars all the way from #124 one week ago to #28; Molly Sims (who also hosts the MTV special on the swimsuit issue) is up to #33; Josie Maran is #42, Daniela Pestova #70, and Ana Beatriz Barros #86. Pamela Anderson is rising again at #11 with her British Maxim cover layout. “Alias” star and Golden Globe winner Jennifer Garner attains a new peak of #15. Kylie Minogue (#20) returns to the Top 20 as her Euro-smash “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” rockets up the U.S. pop chart. Other upwardly mobile ladies on this survey include #21 Anna Kournikova (steamy music video with Enrique Iglesias); #26 “Enterprise” hottie Jolene Blalock (sizzling British Maxim feature); #29 Victoria Silvstedt (fine semi-nude layout in Loaded); Italian sex bomb Sabrina Ferilli at #39 (amazing 55 pages of pin-ups in Italian Max); breast implant queen Katie Price aka “Jordan” at #41 (Loaded cover girl); Controversy cover babe Brooke Burke (#47); and Stuff cover girl Sheryl Crow (#58). The Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City have dominated international media, and leaves its mark on the Glamour Girls Hot 100. Leading the way at #40 is Canadian pairs skater Jamie Sale’, whose tumultuous journey to a gold medal has earned her the covers of both Time and Newsweek. Michelle Kwan comes in at #45 as she seeks her elusive gold medal for figure skating. Norwegian gold medalist for moguls Kari Traa (#76), sexy German speed skater Anni Friesinger (#77), and Canadian speed-skating gold medalist Catriona LeMay Doan (#100) also make the list. Her chart-topping third album, “Britney,” has sold over four million copies; its second single, the ballad “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” (also featured in “Crossroads”) quickly hit #1 on MTV. Britney’s clever new Pepsi commercials, introduced during the Super Bowl, have made her an even more ubiquitous TV presence. following categories: 1)
Movies: The current Top 60 at the box office;
films that recently left theaters; and pictures scheduled for release in the
coming weeks. Note that a
glamorous role in a mid-level film can earn more points than a bland role in a
bigger hit. Oscars, Golden Globes,
and other honors are included; also, critical acclaim can earn the same credit
as box office dollars. 2)
Magazines: Approximately 150 U.S. and
international publications are included in each survey. Magazines on newsstands during the
survey period count most heavily; recent magazines of the previous few weeks
count at reduced value. Covers
earn more points than inside features; top-level magazines (Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, etc.) are accorded higher point totals
than others; nude or semi-nude layouts get extra credit. Newspapers (most notably USA Today) and pin-up calendars are also included
in this category. 3)
TV: What’s on the tube during the
two-week survey period, including first-run movies and appearances on
late-night talk shows; Nielsen ratings and Emmy/Golden Globe awards also taken
