Cameron Diaz returns to the Number One position for the first time since December 2000 thanks to her Golden Globe-nominated performance in “Vanilla Sky” and her gorgeous cover for Harpers Bazaar. Her “Sky” castmate Penelope Cruz, who grabbed the #1 spot in last week’s unpublished chart, is now #3. In between at #2 and ready to challenge for the supreme ranking is Halle Berry, as her award-nominated performance (and nude love scene) in “Monster’s Ball” will be reaching theaters soon. Our #1 two weeks ago, “Ocean’s Eleven” femme star Julia Roberts, is #4, followed by Britney Spears. “Entertainer of the Year” Nicole Kidman comes in at #6 on the first survey of the new year. Leaping six spots to #7 is British bombshell Kelly Brook for her pending American TV debut in “Smallville” and a sensational semi-nude layout in Arena. Elle & British GQ cover girl Heidi Klum is #8, a new personal best. Jennifer Lopez slips to #9, and her extraordinary streak of 68 consecutive weeks in the Top Ten may be at risk. 18-year-old supermodel Kim Smith cracks the Top Ten for the first time at #10 due to her strong cover feature in Arena and a hot layout in German GQ. Two of the strongest movers in the #11-20 zone are #16 Jennifer Connelly, winner of the American Film Institute award as best featured actress in “A Beautiful Mind,” and blonde sexpot Caprice Bourret at #17, for her steamy cover spread in British Maxim. But an even more explosive jump was taken by porn vixen Tera Patrick, #91 just two weeks ago and now all the way up to #20 for her cover feature in the February Penthouse, her High Society cover, and citation by Bomis as the online Porn Star of the Year. Close behind teen-pop sizzler and Maxim cover girl Jessica Simpson (#21) are “Lord of the Rings” elf princess Liv Tyler (#23) and the ever-lovely Meg Ryan (#25) of “Kate & Leopold.” Six Grammy nominations and multiple magazine covers lift up Alicia Keys a full 30 positions to #29; fellow Grammy nominee Janet Jackson (#37) also surges back up the chart. Vigorous big-screen movers are #35 Cate Blanchett (“Lord of the Rings” & “Charlotte Gray”), #36 Michelle Pfeiffer (“I Am Sam”), and #39 Monica Belluci (“Brotherhood of the Wolf”ng next weekend). We’ve had several sets of twins on the Hot 100 (currently the Olsens and the Barbis, and previously the Tenisons), but this week for the first time we have two non-twin sisters on the Hot 100 simultaneously: nine positions behind Michelle is her little sis Dedee Pfeiffer thanks to her nude cover layout in the February Playboy. The February Playmate, Anka Romensky, is right behind at #46. Also note the impressive jump taken by #53 Molly Sims, the Cosmo cover girl and Old Navy TV ad star.
