“Chicago” was the big hit of the Golden Globe Awards, and its co-star, Catherine Zeta Jones (chosen by the Broadcast Film Critics as the year’s best supporting actress), uses the exciting musical as her vehicle to return as Number One Glamour Girl, aided by a sizzling cover feature in Esquire.  Cameron Diaz of the powerful epic “Gangs of New York” holds strong at #2.  Jennifer Lopez—with an amazing 20 consecutive weeks in the Top Five, three of them in the #1 position—is #3 with her romantic comedy smash “Maid In Manhattan” and latest Top Ten single, “All I Have.”  A Golden Globe triumph as best actress in a drama for her remarkable performance in “The Hours” lifts Nicole Kidman to #4.  “Die Another Day” vixen Halle Berry is #5.

 

Clothing-averse pop tart Christina Aguilera continues her long run in the Top Ten at #6 as her single “Beautiful” reaches #4 and her latest nearly-naked magazine cover, British Maxim, hits stands.  Mexican enchantress Salma Hayek (“Frida”) moves back up to #7 with her superb cover feature in Vanity Fair.  Lovely Liv Tyler achieves a new personal best ranking of #8 as “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” soars past the $300 million mark at the box office.  The country/pop bombshell (and Rolling Stone cover girl) who will sing at the Super Bowl halftime show, Shania Twain, rebounds to #9.  A popular choice as the Golden Globe winner for best actress in a musical or comedy in “Chicago,” Renee Zellweger moves into the Top Ten for the first time.

Julianne Moore, part of the superstar femme trio of “The Hours” and a Best Actress choice of many critics’ groups for “Far from Heaven,” remains very strong at #11.  “Two Weeks Notice” star and Cosmo cover girl Sandra Bullock is #12, followed by Golden Globe winner (for “Friends”) Jennifer Aniston, who edges up to #13 with the additional help of a glamourous W magazine cover.  The star of the coveted post-Super Bowl time slot in “Alias,” Jennifer Garner (Glamour cover) is #14. New queen of teen Avril Lavigne surges to #35 with five Grammy nominations and her latest Top Ten smash “I’m With You,” just ahead of Colombian pop princess Shakira (on the cover of Elle).  Playboy newsstand edition blonde bombshells LaTasha Marzolla and Amy Miller (both featured in the current Book of Lingerie) are up to #38 and #39, respectively.  18-year-old Czech blonde Karolina Kurkova jumps to #43 with the cover of Photo.   The Golden Globe winner as best supporting actress for “Adaptation,” the great Meryl Streep, proves that being 50-something is no barrier to glamour girl success by rising to #44.  The latest huge-bosomed teenager to electrify the nude modeling world, 18-year-old Ines Cudna of Poland (simultaneous covers of Score & Voluptuous), takes a big jump to #50.  Current movies produce three strong movers: #51 Estella Warren (of “Kangaroo Jack”), followed by “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” femmes fatale Drew Barrymore and Julia Roberts.   The 18-year-old Latina who models Jennifer Lopez’s clothing line, Natalie Martinez, also has terrific momentum at #56 with her cover bikini layout in Maxim En Espanol.

How the Glamour Girls Hot 100 Is Compiled

Glamour girls earn points for each biweekly chart in the following categories:

1)     Movies: The current Top 60 at the box office; films that recently left theaters; and pictures scheduled for release in the coming weeks.  Note that a glamorous role in a mid-level film can earn more points than a bland role in a bigger hit.  Oscars, Golden Globes, and other honors are included; also, critical acclaim can earn the same credit as box office dollars.

2)     Magazines: Approximately 150 U.S. and international publications are included in each survey.  Magazines on newsstands during the survey period count most heavily; recent magazines of the previous few weeks count at reduced value.  Covers earn more points than inside features; top-level magazines (Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, etc.) are accorded higher point totals than others; nude or semi-nude layouts get extra credit.  Newspapers (most notably USA Today) and pin-up calendars are also included in this category.

3)     TV: What’s on the tube during the two-week survey period, including first-run movies and appearances on late-night talk shows; Nielsen ratings and Emmy/Golden Globe awards also taken into consideration.

4)     Internet: The major factors in this category are the Lycos Top 50, a weekly chart measuring the most-searched items through the Lycos search engine (including many glamour girls), and the daily top 100 rankings by DAI News of the women with the most photo downloads. Selected Web sites are also included, most notably Gateway to Eden, the Playboy Cyber Club, Mystique, Mac & Bumble, Bomis, IGN for Men, Ask Men.com, Famous Centerfolds, Danni’s Hard Drive, Adversus, VIP Models, Candy Dreams, TeraBabes, Maxim, FHM & GQ websites, and others. 

5)     Music: The Billboard singles and album charts; MTV and VH-1 music video rankings as published in Billboard; European and international charts.  Grammy Awards and other music industry honors are credited here.

6)     Home Video: The video sales, video rentals, and DVD sales charts as reported in Billboard and Entertainment Weekly.  This category carries about half the weight of the above “Big Five.”

7)     Sports: Glamorous gals who earn athletic achievements during the survey period.

8)     Other: Broadway and off-Broadway theater; books.

9)     Beauty and Sex Appeal.
