Angelina Jolie kicked some lovely glamour-girl posteriors to take over the Number One position on the Hot 100, thanks to the success of “Tomb Raider” and numerous magazine covers. Bosom-baring “Swordfish” star Halle Berry slips one notch to #2, and moving up impressively to #3 is Catherine Zeta Jones on the strength of her cover-girl status and new film “America’s Sweethearts.” They are followed in order by Pamela Anderson, Jennifer Lopez, “Moulin Rouge” star Nicole Kidman, “Lady Marmalade” chart-topper Christina Aguilera, and Janet Jackson. Busting into the Top Ten for the first time this week are #9 Mariah Carey, whose sizzling Movieline cover layout and sexy music video are teasers for her upcoming starring movie debut; and #10 Kirsten Dunst, terrific in “Crazy/Beautiful.” Coming on strong at #17 is Oscar winner and newly single Julia Roberts (on the eve of the “America’s Sweethearts” premiere). “Planet of the Apes” bombshell Estella Warren jumps to #23 with her cover spread in Talk magazine. Blonde pop tarts Jessica Simpson (#26) and Mandy Moore (leaping from #101 to #34) are shooting up the survey while their new records climb the Billboard charts. “Legally Blonde” cutie Reese Witherspoon is red hot, soaring from #97 to #33, with her film about toand some strong magazine covers. The beauty of mature women is amply demonstrated by the presence of three enchanting age 40+ ladies high on this week’s countdown: #21 Kim Cattrall, #35 Cynthia Myers, and—spectacularly debuting at #39—Go-Go’s leader and Playboy cover girl Belinda Carlisle. While former Playmate Summer Altice takes a big jump to #50 with an outpouring of newsstand appearances, the new August Playmate Jennifer Walcott debuts at #53. Movies: The current Top 60 at the box office;
films that recently left theaters; and pictures scheduled for release in the
coming weeks. Note that a
glamorous role in a mid-level film can earn more points than a bland role in a
bigger hit. Also, critical acclaim
can earn the same credit as box office dollars. 2)
Magazines: Approximately 150 U.S. and
international publications are included in each survey. Magazines on newsstands during the
survey period count most heavily; recent magazines of the previous month or two
count at reduced value. Covers
earn more points than inside features; top-level magazines (Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, etc.) are accorded higher point totals
than others; nude or semi-nude layouts get extra credit. Newspapers (most notably the London
Sun and USA Today) and pin-up calendars are also included
in this category. 3)
TV: What’s on the tube during the
two-week survey period, including not only series but movies airing on the
networks and cable plus appearances on late-night talk shows; Nielsen ratings
and Emmy/Golden Globe awards also taken into consideration. 4)
Internet: The major factors in this category are
the Lycos Top 50, a weekly chart measuring the most-searched items through the
