In a close contest, Catherine Zeta Jones returns to the Number One position on the strength of numerous magazine covers and the continued success of the Oscar-winning film “Traffic,” plus another movie, “America’s Sweethearts,” on the way. Her co-star in “Sweethearts,” Julia Roberts, remains in the #3 position, still basking in Oscar’s afterglow. #2 Jennifer Lopez is a good bet to reclaim the top spot shortly with the May 18ng of the mystery/romance “Angel Eyes.” The cover of Rolling Stone helps Pamela Anderson move back up to #4, and her bosom buddy Elizabeth Hurley advances a notch to #5 thanks to a remarkable pictorial tribute in the May issue of Arena. A smash #1 single, new album, and sizzling magazine covers enable Janet Jackson’s powerful surge to carry her upward again from #10 to #6. A hot new album and an outpouring of sexy covers also boosts Beyonce Knowles of Destiny’s Child to #8. The fastest mover in the Top 20 is Canadian supermodel Estella Warren, jumping from #30 to #15, thanks in part to a featured role in the Sylvester Stallone film “Driven.” Big movers with potential for still higher rankings next time include: Liv Tyler (leaping from #77 to #22 with her sexy performance in “One Night At McCool’s”); #25 Renee Zellweger (a box office and critical smash in “Bridget Jones’s Diary”); new Playmate of the Year Brande Roderick (rocketing onto the Hot 100 at #26); Jennifer Aniston (given a boost to #45 by her sexy Vanity Fair cover); and all-time supermodel Claudia Schiffer (roaring upward by 43 positions to #46 thanks to a spectacular cover layout in Italian Max magazine). girls earn points for each biweekly chart in the following categories: 1)
Movies: The current Top 60 at the box office;
films that recently left theaters; and pictures scheduled for release in the
coming weeks. Note that a glamorous
role in a mid-level film can earn more points than a bland role in a bigger
hit. Also, critical acclaim can
earn the same credit as box office dollars. 2)
Magazines: Approximately 150 U.S. and
international publications are included in each survey. Magazines on newsstands during the
survey period count most heavily; recent magazines of the previous month or two
count at reduced value. Covers
earn more points than inside features; top-level magazines (Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, etc.) are accorded higher point totals
than others; nude or semi-nude layouts get extra credit. Newspapers (most notably the London
Sun and USA Today) and pin-up calendars are also included
in this category. 3)
TV: What’s on the tube during the
two-week survey period, including not only series but movies airing on the
networks and cable plus appearances on late-night talk shows; Nielsen ratings
and Emmy/Golden Globe awards also taken into consideration. 4)
Internet: The major factors in this category are
the Lycos Top 50, a weekly chart measuring the most-searched items through the
Lycos search engine (including many glamour girls); Yahoo’s 100 most
popular women based on total websites, Yahoo clubs, and auction items; and the
Bomis Report rankings of models, porn stars, and others with the most website
hits. Selected Web sites are also included, most notably Gateway to Eden, the
Playboy Cyber Club, Mystique, IGN for Men, Ask Men.com, Village Babes, Famous
Centerfolds, Women of Desire, and others.
