For the first time since May 30, Jennifer Lopez takes over the Number One position, reigning supreme among glamour girls for a record 8th time, with her single “I’m Real” all the way up to #2 in the country, and her spectacular Stuff cover layout ranking among the year’s best. #2 Angelina Jolie is followed by Tom Cruise’s current gal-pal Penelope Cruz (“Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”) at #3, and his ex-wife Nicole Kidman (“The Others”) right behind at #4. Britney Spears is surging again at #5, boosted in part by her current Rolling Stone cover and highly-anticipated MTV Video Music Awards Show performance (just after deadline for this survey). Catherine Zeta Jones (“America’s Sweethearts”) is #6, just ahead of the world’s hottest inactive tennis player, Anna Kournikova (cover girl of the current FHM). Janet Jackson edges back up a spot to #8 with her hot cover layout in British FHM, and smash single “Someone to Call My Lover.” #9 Mariah Carey is gearing up again for the delayed release of her film “Glitter,” with the soundtrack hitting stores shortly. The box office bonanza for “American Pie 2” jumps Shannon Elizabeth to her first-ever ranking in the Top Ten; her “Pie” co-stars Mena Suvari (#28) and Tara Reid (#35) are also doing nicely. The tragic death of rising superstar Aaliyah left fans in mourning just as the continued success of her album, and the cover of Teen People, boost her to #19. Sarah Michelle Gellar leaps 12 positions to #16 with her Entertainment Weekly cover, and building anticipation for the return of “Buffy.” Playboy Voluptuous Vixens cover girl Veronika Zemanova reaches a new peak of #17. The success of her HBO concert special and sold-out tour enable Madonna to return to the Top 20 for the first time since April. coming weeks. Note that a
glamorous role in a mid-level film can earn more points than a bland role in a
bigger hit. Oscars, Golden Globes,
and other honors are included; also, critical acclaim can earn the same credit
as box office dollars. 2)
Magazines: Approximately 150 U.S. and
international publications are included in each survey. Magazines on newsstands during the
survey period count most heavily; recent magazines of the previous few weeks
count at reduced value. Covers
earn more points than inside features; top-level magazines (Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, etc.) are accorded higher point totals
than others; nude or semi-nude layouts get extra credit. Newspapers (most notably USA Today) and pin-up calendars are also included
in this category. 3)
TV: What’s on the tube during the two-week
survey period, including not only series but movies airing on the networks and
cable plus appearances on late-night talk shows; Nielsen ratings and
Emmy/Golden Globe awards also taken into consideration. 4)
Internet: The major factors in this category are
the Lycos Top 50, a weekly chart measuring the most-searched items through the
Lycos search engine (including many glamour girls); Yahoo’s 100 most
